Gucci hit by employee complaints in China

SHENZHEN, China, Oct. 15 (UPI) — Gucci employees in Shenzhen, China, have complained company work rules were “a kind of torture” that contributed to physical health problems.

In an open letter, employees at the upscale fashion and leather goods store owned by a French company said they were forced to stand 14 hours a day, and were denied food and water during their shifts.

“It was a kind of torture for us to stand for more than 14 hours a day. No short rest, water or food was allowed even for a pregnant employee,” their letter alleges.

The staff alleges the abuse contributed to several miscarriages, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.

The alleged abuse also included forcing employees to pay for stolen items, even though insurance also paid for such losses, and having to ask for bathroom breaks.

Pinault-Printemps-Redoute of France, which owns Italy-based Gucci, said it was investigating the matter. City officials in Shenzhen also said they were investigating the allegations, which also include a complaint that the store withheld overtime pay.

Five employees say they are owed thousands of dollars in back wages.

In response to the letter, a spokesman for Gucci said the firm “has proactively engaged external consultants to conduct a comprehensive review to support ongoing actions that can enhance our organizational structure, the welfare and training of our people, talent recruitment and retention and other business practices in China.”
