Exelon Sends Workers to Help Japan’s Nuke Crisis

Exelon is engaging employees to do more than just their job description, but to support and aid in a crisis. It gives the employees a sense of fulfillment when they are able to do something with their career that helps others.

(Crain’s) — Exelon Corp. has dispatched two Illinois-based employees to Tokyo to aid efforts to bring Japan’s nuclear disaster under control.

An executive and a technical manager with Chicago-based Exelon’s nuclear unit arrived in Japan over the weekend and are participating in a U.S. team assembled by Japanese nuclear plant builder Hitachi Ltd. to advise Tokyo Electric Power Co., the owner of the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors, an Exelon spokesman said Tuesday.

Exelon, the largest nuclear plant operator in the United States, declined to identify the two employees, but the spokesman said they’ll remain in Tokyo and won’t be at the site of the disaster. The spokesman said both have international experience in the nuclear power industry.

Other companies that have sent employees to help include General Electric Co., the manufacturer of the crippled Japanese plant, as well as several Exelon-owned reactors in Illinois, and San Francisco-based engineering firm Bechtel Corp., which led cleanup efforts at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island plant after its partial meltdown in 1979.
